Chapter Nine

“You’re worried he’ll disappear?” Lara looked from Nate to the PI office down the street.

When they’d pulled out of the lot, Nate had driven barely half a block before turning around and then slipping into a slot between two parallel parked vehicles. He’d explained about the call he’d received from Agent Prater. Obviously, he couldn’t have shared the news with Lara while waiting in Wynwood’s lobby.

“I should be calling this in.” He kept his focus on Wynwood’s office. “But if I do, he’ll shut down. Swear he didn’t say any of what he shared in there.”

“And we’ll lose any possibility that he can lead us to the Butcher,” she added.

“Or that the Butcher will come to him.”

Lara’s pulse skipped at the prospect. “There’s a strong possibility that Wynwood is the only person who can identify the Butcher. Given he’s been outed by my genealogy adventure, Patrick Franklin, or whoever the hell he is, may want to tie up any loose ends.”

“I’m confident the probability has crossed Mr. Wynwood’s mind,” Nate agreed.

“And yet he didn’t seem concerned.” Something was off with that scenario in Lara’s opinion. There was fearless and there was stupid. Wynwood didn’t strike her as the latter.

“If we keep an eye on him, he could lead us where we want to go.”

This was precisely what she’d wanted to do since walking out of that office. But going that route—following the lead on their own—was a huge risk for Nate. He would be putting his career on the line. Breaking protocol.

Failing to do his duty. Lara couldn’t let him do that. She didn’t want to be responsible for any damage to his career.

“As much as I want to see where this guy can take us,” she began, “I don’t want your career to suffer as a result. You’ve gone above and beyond already, this is too much.”

They sat in silence for a minute, attention fixed on the small, shabby office.

“Sometimes following protocol isn’t the right thing to do.”

She couldn’t say she was disappointed at his reasoning. “In that case, I guess now we wait.”

“Now we wait.”

Lara still felt a bit rattled after hearing all Wynwood had to say.

…the two of you think exactly alike.

She closed her eyes and forced the renewed pounding in her chest to slow.

“That didn’t take long.”

Her eyes popped open. Nate was right. Wynwood was backing out of his parking slot.

Despite her every effort, her pulse shot back into a frantic rhythm. “If he sees us…”

She didn’t have to say the rest. Nate was a seasoned agent. He’d done half a dozen years in the field.

“He won’t,” Nate assured her. “Not if I can help it.”

Wynwood drove in the opposite direction, nearly disappearing from view before Nate eased out of their spot to follow him.

“Maybe he’s going to lunch.” She didn’t have to check the time to know it was well past noon. Her stomach reminded her it was empty.
